Prior to inserting citations, check for duplicate references in your library (see 'Removing Duplicates' for instructions).
Open your Word document. Place your cursor where you would like to insert the citation.

Open the installer Double-click Mendeley Desktop in your browser's download window. Drag Mendeley Desktop Dragging Mendeley Desktop into your Applications folder will install the application. If an app doesn't recognize a plug-in, extension, or other add-on, quit the app, select this setting, and try again. The above instruction works for me, I have now successfully used the Mendeley work Plugin in Mac mini M1 chip. Open up Word and click on the main menu in the top left, and then select 'Word Options' towards the bottom of this menu. From here select 'Add-Ins' on the left, and locate the 'Mendeley-0.0.0.dot' entry. The 0.0.0 number will reflect the respective version you have installed. Next to it you will see the directory in which it is located.
Insert citation in Microsoft Word for Windows
In the box that appears, enter text (author's last name, year, title, keyword, etc.) to search for references in your library. Select a reference, then either search for additional references or click OK.
You can also search for references from within your Mendeley library by clicking Go to Mendeley. In Mendeley Desktop, highlight the references that you wish to insert. To highlight multiple references, hold down the Ctrl or Command keys while you click on references.
Once you have selected your references, click the Cite button (Windows) (Mac) in the toolbar along the top. The selected references will be inserted into your document.

One of the great built-in features in Mendeley is without a doubt the citation plugin for your word processor of choice. We currently support most of popular word processors such as MS word (Mac and Windows), OpenOffice, Neo Office, and Libre Office. We’re continuously working to improve the efficiency and general user interface of this plugin because we feel it is an important component within Mendeley Desktop and your overall research workflow.
That being said, I’d like to touch on a small aspect that many Mendeley citation plugin users are probably unaware of. If you add multiple citations at the same time, the appropriate citation style is used for such situations. For example, if you were citing 3 articles and they were the 3rd, 4th and 5th citations added, they’d probably be added as follows 3-5 (if using a numeric inline citation style format like “Nature Genetics”.). However, if you went in to the document and wanted to add another reference in that bundle, it would show up as 3-5 6. That is not good.
Quick solution? Delete the citations and add all four together. Which would mean remembering which reference they were, selecting all four and adding them in again.
Better solution? Merge the citations! Just select the 3-5 and 6 citation and then go to your citation plugin options in your word processor and select Merge citations. The end result should be 3-6. No need to go track down the references again. Just select, merge. Done.
